About Us: Our History

In March 2002, Pastor Kevin Aiken invited a few friends in the faith to join him at the Chestnut Hill Hotel located on Germantown Avenue. We convened in a small banquet room and listened intently as Pastor Aiken professed the vision that God had revealed to him. Pastor Aiken explained that it was through much prayer and much fasting that the Lord had led him to organize a place of worship where "true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth" (John 4:23 KJV).

After a time of prayer, fasting, and reflection, Pastor Aiken met with us again in April 2002.  It was during this second assembly, that all confessed our agreement with God's calling of Pastor Aiken and our acceptance of him as our Pastor.  At that time, we all agreed that together we would form the Heart of Worship Restoration Center.

On Sunday, June 9, 2002 Heart of Worship held our first discipleship class in the Prince Hall Elementary school located in West Oak Lane. The discipleship classes were held each Sunday for twelve weeks and were developed by Pastor Aiken to provide a foundational understanding of the doctrine that would govern the Heart of Worship Restoration Center.  The discipleship classes focused on biblical principles such as Baptism, Communion, Stewardship, Prayer, Praise, Worship and Spiritual Gifts.

During the twelve week course, the number of individuals committed to the Heart of Worship increased significantly from about 16 to over 60. On Sunday, September 8, 2002 the ministry was officially launched during its birthing service which was celebrated as a "Service of Triumph".  It was during this service that Pastor Aiken was commissioned by Pastor Keith Reed, Sr. as the Pastor of Heart of Worship Restoration Center.  Pastor Aiken also received a charge and words of encouragement from his father the late Bishop Joseph C. Aiken, Sr.

On Sunday, October 6, 2002, Heart of Worship observed our first Communion service.  Unfortunately, due to the challenges associated with not having our own sanctuary, Heart of Worship was not able to baptize as frequently as we preferred.  The first Baptism service was held on February 22, 2004.  In order to resolve this issue, and to expand the ministry and the services that are provided, Pastor Aiken initiated a search for a permanent church home.  The search ended on March 30, 2005 at 5317 N 3rd Street when Heart of Worship obtained a mortgage and reconstruction loan.

Although many obstacles turned a 3 month renovation plan into a 3 1/2 year project, Heart of Worship remained steadfast and our perseverance was rewarded on Saturday, June 7, 2008, when we held a ground breaking ceremony to mark the recommencement of the renovations.  Unfortunately, this start date was also delayed.  Nevertheless, Heart of Worship is a true witness that delayed does not mean denied.  The renovations finally resumed about a year later and on December 31, 2009, Heart of Worship celebrated watch-night service and brought in the New Year in our new home.

Although there were many challenges along the way, none of these obstacles halted the work of the ministry.  Heart of Worship ordained its first Assistant Pastor, Vincent B. McNeil, Sr., and licensed nine Associate Ministers.  Heart Worship has ordained 10 deacons during its first Deacons Ordination Ceremony on October 24, 2010.  The year 2010 was a memorable year for Heart of Worship that began with the victorious march into our own sanctuary.  The year included many memorable celebrations such as: the Temple Dedication Ceremony; the Associate Ministers Robe Dedication Ceremony; the first Pastoral Banquet; the first Vacation Bible School; the first Youth Worship Service; the first annual Fellowship in the Park and Pastor Aiken's first international mission to India.  God's blessings for Heart of Worship also continued into 2011.  During 2011, Heart of Worship held its first baptism service in its own sanctuary.

Heart of Worship knows that this is just the beginning and looks forward to God's continued blessings as He enlarges our territory for His glory.
